During their visit, the DOC Research Institute delegation met with the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Law at Tehran University, where they gave a presentation to faculty members, MA, and postgraduate students.
On 31 January, Dr Vladimir Yakunin took part in the seminar ‘Greater Eurasia: Cooperation for Peace’ at the Institute for Iran-Eurasia Studies (IRAS). Dr Vladimir Yakunin’s address drew particular attention to current trends in global development, the need to retain existing models and build larger groupings, including on the Eurasian continent. Development, in this context, was defined as the kind of multilateral cooperation seen in projects such as the Eurasian Economic Union or the New Silk Road.
Discussions centred on the key role of dialogue in different cultures and religions, as a counterbalance to attempts to escalate global tensions and confrontation, and participants also took the opportunity to consider outgoing German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s recent comments on globalization, and the latest political developments in the United States.
On 01 February, the DOC delegation took part in a round table at the Institute for Political and International Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (IPIS), with debate focussing on potential cooperation and development in a multi-polar world.
During the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding on continuing cooperation between the DOC Research Institute and IPIS was signed, recognising the need to promote and reinforce cooperation and the exchange of views and information. It envisages exchanges for experts and researchers, joint research programmes, sharing publications, invitations to research symposia, academic conferences, and meetings.
The delegation’s visit also drew interest in Iranian government circles, and talks were held with Dr Ebrahim Rahimpour, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs, who expressed his interest in continuing this dialogue. Talks took pace with Dr Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman, Head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) and a meeting was held with Seyed Alinaghi Kharrazi, Head of Strategic Council on Foreign Relations of the Supreme Leader’s Administration.
During this meeting, the parties highlighted the historic initiative launched by President Khatami at the UN in 1998 to promote the idea of a Dialogue of Civilizations, and the Iranian side appreciated the activities formerly carried out by the World Public Forum Dialogue of Civilizations and now being advanced by the DOC Research Institute.
Attention was also drawn to the close historical ties between our civilizations, and to the readiness to build cooperation in this fast-changing world, and promote the idea of aligned, equal, and successful development. The Iranian side was also invited to participate in this year’s 15th Anniversary Rhodes Forum.
