DOC RI Hosts Roundtable on Turkey

The roundtable “Turkey: What is Ahead?” was held in the DOC Research Institute’s Moscow Office on 24 May 2017.
The discussion was built around two keynote reports delivered by Pavel Shlykov, Associate Professor of the Moscow State University’s Institute of Asian and African Studies, and Victor Nadein-Raevsky, Senior Researcher at the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations. DOC RI’s Senior Researcher Alexey Malashenko moderated the event.

Special attention was paid to the issue of Islamisation in the country and how recent developments in Turkey impact its foreign policy as a whole, but in particular its actions in Syria and its relations with Russia and the United States.
An attempt was made to define the correlation between the domestic political struggle and Turkey’s foreign policy. The struggle between Gülen and Erdogan was examined, as was Gülen’s role in building the Turkish and Turkic elites, and the correlation between pan-Turkist nationalism, neo-Ottomanist doctrine, and Erdogan’s attempts to combine Islamism and nationalism.
It was concluded that large-scale political repressions and constitutional reform that sees Turkey transform into a presidential republic are, in fact, a continuation of the general trend of power consolidation in Erdogan’s hands, which can be traced back to the mid-2000s. Key components in this process were analyzed, such as the subordination of the media and the judicial system, reshaping civil-military relations
