Vladimir Yakunin addresses Oxford Central Banking event

On 5 September 2018, Dr Vladimir Yakunin, the chairman of the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute’s supervisory board and the head of the Department of State Governance of the Faculty of Political Science at Moscow State University, delivered a keynote speech to the Central Banking Executive Programme held at Linacre College, University of Oxford. The programme is organised by the Association for Research on Banking and the Economy, a UK-registered educational charity, in association with the Centre for Banking, Finance and Sustainable Development.
The title of Dr Yakunin’s speech was The ‘roads’ and ‘belts’ of Eurasia: Many paths, all leading to each other.
In his speech, he discussed the nature of modern geopolitical crises, saying that one never knows when the next one will occur, and pointing out that institutions of global influence are no longer the powers they once were. In the context of the loss of the obvious US leadership in a world political system in crisis, attempts are being made to propose alternative development options, both regional and global.
The most striking example of an alternative is the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. It offers a development model based on the joint implementation of international infrastructure projects which can not only act as transport corridors, but also create opportunities for socio-economic development in the countries and regions where they are implemented.
